Snow Canyon

A short hike followed by playing in the sand makes for a really fun day. This is a page all about Snow Canyon which is a fun State Park close to the Flash House.

Basics

There are two entrances to Snow Canyon, the South and the North East. There is one road that runs mainly North/South and connects the two entrances with a Ranger Station half way between. There are a few bathrooms here and there along the road. It costs $6 for a car to get in.

Hikes

Johnson Canyon

The trailhead for Johnson's trail is just inside the South Entrance. This hike goes around the east mountains and up a canyon. Near the end of the hike, there is an Arch, but it is easy to miss because it is difficult to see daylight on the other side. This trail is closed from March 15 to September 14.

Lava Tubes

The lava tubes are closer to the North end of the park. There is a parking lot and an overflow lot near the trailhead. The hikes is through a lava rock field of black rocks that provides stark contrast with the green plants, red rocks to the South and white rocks to the North. The entrance looks like a pit, but upon further inspection there is a way down.

There are actually two ways in. The larger, more obvious hole is easier to get down while the other opening is easier to climb out of. You can hike for a while inside the cave if you have a flashlight. There are some hard parts that an 8 year old can climb with help. Both ends of the tunnel have larger rooms. Emily says she has seen it and probably wouldn't go back. There are also more caves on the map further along the trail.

  • Difficulty:Technical
  • Distance:0.6 miles round trip to the cave mouth
  • Features:Cave
  • Incline:Mild

Whiterocks Amphitheater

Petrified Dunes

We haven't been on this hike yet, but it looks fun.

Sand

Red Dunes

This sand is better than any beach we have been to and there are mountains of it. This is visible from the road and kids will play here for hours.

The White Dune

This is a much smaller white dune that is up in the Whiterocks Amphitheater.
